Presidency of the Republic of Moldova
President Maia Sandu discussed yesterday in Chisinau with Paolo Gentiloni, European Commissioner for Economy, about the Republic of Moldova's economic integration into the European Union.
The head of state stressed that in the last ten years, the European single market has become the most important export destination for the Republic of Moldova. In 2022, 60% of Moldovan exports went to European Union countries, and Moldovan producers earned over 2.5 billion dollars in this market.
"We managed to get seven categories of products - tomatoes, garlic, table grapes, apples, cherries, plums and grape juice - sold on the EU market without our exporters paying customs duties. Next, our goal is to increase the access of our products to the European market by eliminating quotas on Moldovan agricultural products and facilitating the access of animal products to the EU market. In order to integrate our economy into the European one and benefit more from this stable and rich market, we are also working on connecting the transport and energy infrastructure", said the President.
In the discussions with Commissioner Gentiloni, President Maia Sandu informed him about the progress made in fulfilling the recommendations of the European Commission, necessary for the initiation of EU accession negotiations as soon as possible. "We are determined to meet all the criteria and conditions necessary to align with EU standards and become a member country," the head of state concluded.
